Sumario: ABSTRACT The study entitled: "Work motivation of teaching staff", was developed taking as units of analysis the directors and teaching staff of the National Institutes of Basic Education of Mazatenango. Surveys and interviews were applied to the informants. Among the aspects of work motivation evaluated are academic motivational achievement, anxiety, fear of failure and the director's leadership as a motivating agent. It was possible to show that within the teaching staff it is unmotivated by extrinsic factors. Although it is true that some directors motivate teachers with actions aimed at raising their self-esteem at work, the result in labor productivity is minimal due to the personal and family life conditions of teachers that pressure them and present them as a staff with emotional and physical exhaustion. Although every teacher works hoping to receive a salary; It is the emotions that give meaning to their work life, which are affected when they do not have classrooms with decent furniture and equipment, which causes them to lose work motivation. Finally, the directors, due to their multiple administrative occupations, do not provide them with the support and pedagogical accompaniment in the classroom
