Croup is a condition that causes inflammation of the upper respiratory tract,
which includes the larynx (of the voice) and the trachea. It usually leads to the
appearance of a dry cough, similar to the barking of a dog, or hoarseness, particularly
during crying. However, due to ignorance, it frequently tends to be confused with
laryngitis. Hence, in this degree work, the general objective was to "Describe the
knowledge about the prehospital protocol for the care of children with croup in the
emergency medical technicians of SUME 911, David, from October-December 2017".
This descriptive quantitative research used as a data collection method a 25-item
questionnaire with responses based on the Likert Scale of the type Always, Almost
always, Sometimes, Almost never and Never. To verify its reliability, the Cronbach's
Alpha test was applied, and the result obtained was 0.828, which certifies that the
results obtained would be reliable. This questionnaire was applied to the 11 emergency
medical technicians assigned to David's SUME 911 and the statistical results were
analyzed in the SPSS software and then they were graphed and presented in a more
comprehensible way in percentage tables accompanied by stacked bar graphs and a
triangulation. The conclusions showed that even though the SUME 911 patient care
protocol widely describes the croup care process, the medical emergency technicians
surveyed do not know in practice how to deal with these types of emergencies, which
despite their frequency, considered rare, as it is generally misdiagnosed. SUME 911
was recommended to carry out a training process and the first responders self-training
and motivation to prepare individually.
