Sumario: A study was conducted to characterize and analyze the presence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in sediments of Manzanillo Bay in order to determine their influence on the biodegradation processes. A total of five study stations were identified. The study determined the texture of the sediment, organic content, Hydrogen Potential (pH), temperature, total coliforms and E. coli to evaluate their influence on the biodegradation process of the area. All the study areas were composed of more than 80 % silty clay. The organic content concentration ranged from 8% to 32 % while pH values ranged mostly from neutral to slightly alkaline (7.0 - 7.8). The temperature of the sediments varied between 22.6 oC to 25.2 oC, the Escherichia Coli and total Coliforms values found on the sediments were less than 1 NMP. The presence of phenanthrene was identified, 73 mg / L naphthalene and 66 mg / L. The trends observed in both, size and sediment organic content, suggest a favorable environment to the affinity of organic compounds such as PAHs which represents an advantage for the tolerance activity of some bacteria and the consumption of hydrocarbons for others. Monitoring the PAH in water, effluent sediments as well as an appropriate methodology for the quality assurance of the environment are also recommended in order to establish control parameters and standards for monitoring coastal areas.
