In this article, laughter is highlighted as an inherent faculty of the human being, which manifests itself in reality, driven by the comical, as part of daily life, where it fulfills a series of positive functions for individuals and societies. And since the engine that moves it, the comical, was installed in literature since those times when the only vehicle for literary creation was orality, laughter and literature are amalgamated. The comic literarytext of greatest content and permanence is the oral, popular, and traditional, which in the narrative is constituted in a genre called joke or “chiste” (which is also known in the province of Chiriquí, as “talla”). After documenting the traditional popular narrative in this province for two decades, we offer samples of its humorous literature, to witness not only its existence, but its character and value.
