Effect of insemination catheter type and calving order on swine production parameters

The present study was to evaluate the effect of catheter types, cervical artificial insemination (CAI) or intracervical (IC) and post-CAI or intrauterine (IU), on first calving and multiparous sows on production and reproduction variables. There was an effect (P < 0,05) of catheter type (IU o...

Sumario: The present study was to evaluate the effect of catheter types, cervical artificial insemination (CAI) or intracervical (IC) and post-CAI or intrauterine (IU), on first calving and multiparous sows on production and reproduction variables. There was an effect (P < 0,05) of catheter type (IU or CI) over the weaned piglets (11,61 ± 0,29 and 10,85 ± 0,33, respectively) and the weaning litter weight (78, 28 ± 2.47 and 68,80 ± 2,85, respectively), in both the sows inseminated with intrauterine catheter presented higher values than the ones inseminated with intracervical catheter. In addition, an effect (P < 0,05) of calving order (multiparous or first calving) was found on piglets born alive, stillborn piglets (2,26 ± 0,32 and 1,45 ± 0,52, respectively), total of born piglets (14,34 ± 0,43 and 12,54 ± 0,68, respectively), litter weight at birth (16,11 ± 0,39 and 13,95 ± 0,62, respectively), and weaning weight (76,40 ± 2,01 and 70,68 ± 3,20, respectively). The multiparous sows showed higher values than first calving ones. There was no effect (P > 0,05) of interaction catheter type-calving order on the variables analyzed.
