It is not only a consequence of industrialization in or near urban centers, but also it is necessary to consider factors such as vehicle fleet size and poor road infrastructure. In Panama, the concern for air pollution comes from the 90s, with the approval of the law No. 36 of 1996 that established the Specialized Analysis Institute (IEA in Spanish) at the University of Panama (UP). This institute has the responsibility to install and maintain a network of stations to measure and analyze air pollution parameters at a national level, specially those produced by internal combustion engines. Panama is considered as the Central American city with the highest air pollution index, due to the impact produced by emissions from the transport sector (Swisscontact 1999). In this article, we analyzed the relationship between population density vs ozone, by employing Geographic Information System (GIS) over monthly averaged data en μg/m3, for 2005, 2008 and 2010. Influence zones of each one of the four monitoring station evaluated were also used. Finally, it was found that highest ozone concentrations were found in areas with highest population density. La contaminación atmosférica es la acumulación en el aire de concentraciones de diferentes sustancias que pueden ocasionar daños en los ecosistemas. La misma no es consecuencia única de la industrialización en o cerca de centros urbanos, también deben considerarse otros factores como el parque vehicular y la mala infraestructura vial. La preocupación por la contaminación atmosférica en Panamá surge a partir de los años 90, cuando la Ley No. 36 de 1996 estableció que el Instituto Especializado de Análisis (IEA) de la Universidad de Panamá (UP), tiene la obligación de instalar y mantener una red de medición de la contaminación del aire producida principalmente por motores de combustión interna, a nivel nacional. Panamá es considerada como la ciudad centroamericana con mayor índice de contaminación en el aire, esto debido al impacto que producen las emisiones generadas por el transporte. En este estudio se utilizó el Sistema de Información Geográfica (SIG) para analizar el comportamiento del ozono respecto a la densidad de población, con base en las áreas de influencia. Los datos de ozono se presentan en concentraciones promedios mensuales (μg/m3). Se confeccionaron mapas de contaminación de ozono y de densidad de población para los años 2005, 2008 y 2010.
