Homosexuality is a complex and diverse topic that has been approached in
different ways. This same complexity is related to the interpretations that are given
around the phenomenon, by society and the attitudes that are manifested, explicitly or
implicitly, from those conceptions. This premise generates the approach of this
research “Social perception of homosexuality and behavior of families with a
homosexual child; whose objective was to understand the social perception of
homosexuality and behavior of families with homosexual children.
The study was carried out in 2023 in Panama, through a qualitative approach
and a phenomenological design, with the analysis units being 3 families from the
Changuinola district to which in-depth interviews and a non-participant observation
guide were applied. The interviews had five categories, namely: the social perception
of homosexuality, ideological beliefs, religious beliefs, norms, and laws; and family
behavior. While the observation criteria contemplated: non-verbal behavior, spatial
behavior, extralinguistic behavior and linguistic behavior. The results found, in the
content analysis carried out, conclude that the perception that families have about
homosexuality and homosexual people, come from the way in which they introject the
ideologies and beliefs that are maintained in the society, in which they live, However, families with a homosexual child reject these beliefs, although they try to maintain
some canons of society to preserve their belonging to the community.
