Sumario: ABSTRACT WATER BALANCE IN THE FACILITIES OF ALCOHOL AND RUM DISTILLERY -DARSA- The main purpose in this investigation is to quantify the total amount of water consumed during the different processes for the production of alcohol, conducted by the Alcohol and Rum Distillery SA (DARSA); such quantification must support the planning, development and management of water resources, in compliance with the environmental policy of DARSA, and must increase the efficiency in water use. To implement the water balance, a general methodology was used, which is promoted and implemented by the Guatemalan Cleaner Production Center. This method performs the following process: a physical recognition, identifying the inputs and outputs of the resource, execution of measurements for obtaining data, flow diagrams for each identified process, graphs of results, summary tables, and data collection from the intensity and productivity indicator, to determine the efficiency of the method of production that is currently used. As a result, it was found that the total consumption of water for the industrial processes of DARSA is 39,162,655 gal/month,(148,246.31 m3/month) (2,470.77 canon/month) that is equivalent to the coverage of the water resources of 2.470 houses monthly, on the basis that there is a need of canon 1 water per month to protect a home of room;which are extracted from wells that are in operation. The investigation concluded that the production method used by DARSA is efficient; the water used is discarded through the system of general dump in the parking area, and is used in the system of fertigation in TULULA´S fields of sugar cane allowing water reuse in other processes.
