Sumario: This research was carried out at the Institute of Basic Education by the cooperative "San Andrés", in the municipality of San Andrés Villa Seca in the department of Retalhuleu. The problem of expectations for academic development of students was addressed. To carry out the study, the qualitative method was applied, applying formal and informal interviews to the young people who were asked for their life history and invited to participatory colloquia where they related their expectations of personal academic development. Among the main findings of the research, the factors that affect the expectations of academic development in adolescents are: the hostile environment that they live in their family and in their community environment, which make students feel insecure of their personal welfare. There is little interest on the part of parents for the adolescent's school education, the parents' financial shortage, which does not guarantee the possibility of supporting young people in their school expenses, and finally, the abuse or abandonment of their children by parents. Adolescents are subjected to emotional suffering that directly affects their behavior in the establishment and consequently their future as adults. The academic development expectations of adolescents are complicated by the series of obstacles that society and their parents unconsciously or consciously put up during their academic training.
