Sumario: ABSTRACT Totonicapán is one of the 340 municipal districts the Guatemala Republic, and has an area of 328 square kilometers. It has 72 populated centers, according to the Municipal Dictionary of Guatemala, 2001. In this territory, the inferential investigation entitled “Characterization of solid waste and waste generated in the homes of the urban area of the municipality of Totonicapán” was carried out, which can serve as a reference for an appropriate process for municipal waste management. As a result of the 148 homes studied, a generation of 2,115.59 kilograms per week of solid waste and waste was obtained, with this data the production of the 4,288 homes that exist in the urban area was projected giving a total generation of 10,790.18 kilograms per day of waste and scrap, of which 41% is organic matter, 23% recyclable materials; where paper and cardboard predominate, and with 36% non-recoverable materials. Within the characterization, the production of residues and solid waste generated by each person per day was calculated, resulting in 0.5036 kilograms. Thus, the calculation of the density was obtained, which allows estimating the space occupied by each type of material per day, which is a total of 104.61m3 of solid waste and residues. Given this situation, a solid waste and residues management plan is suggested, which is based on suggestions that were generated through didactic tools where the four mayors of the urban area and the board of directors of goods and natural resources of the 48 Cantones participated. The plan establishes three lines of action which are: An awareness campaign, solid waste management and finally optimization of the collection system. The plan will allow adequate administration and final disposal of household waste, in order to improve environmental conditions and comply with the provisions of article 68 of the municipal code.
