Since little research has been carried out in this area, the following study aimed to provide a better understanding of this educational phenomenon by analyzing the listening instruction process of primary school students, taking into account two main aspects, the listening comprehension strategies used in class and the barriers faced along the process by teachers and students. The research was carried out as a case study which focused on the daily experiences of the teacher and second cycle students at Peñas Blancas Elementary School in Pérez Zeledón. The study revealed that the listening skill receives less attention than the other language skills, not all the listening stages recommended for the teaching of this skill were performed in class, a few learning strategies were slightly carried out while others were completely excluded, there is a strong reliance on the students native language to ensure comprehension, there is a need of exposing students to various authentic texts, accents and speech rates, other than their teacher‟s, and factors such as background noise and lack of appropriate technological devices interrupted the development of the skill analyzed. Based on these findings, the researchers designed a teacher‟s toolkit titled “Listening Encounters” to provide tasks where the listening skill is enhanced and aided by the application of different learning strategies. El mejoramiento de la capacidad de escucha de los estudiantes de inglés como idioma extranjero se considera una prioridad durante los años de la escuela primaria en el contexto de las escuelas públicas de Costa Rica. Dado que se han realizado pocas investigaciones en esta área, el siguiente estudio tiene como objetivo proporcionar una mejor comprensión de este fenómeno educativo mediante el análisis del proceso de instrucción auditiva de los estudiantes de la escuela primaria, teniendo en cuenta dos aspectos principales, las estrategias de comprensión auditiva utilizadas en clase y las barreras que enfrentan a lo largo del proceso los profesores y los estudiantes. La investigación se llevó a cabo como un estudio de caso que se centró en las experiencias cotidianas del profesor y de los alumnos de segundo ciclo de la Escuela Primaria de Peñas Blancas en Pérez Zeledón. El estudio reveló que la habilidad de escuchar recibe menos atención que las otras habilidades del lenguaje, no todas las etapas de escucha recomendadas para la enseñanza de esta habilidad fueron realizadas en clase, algunas estrategias de aprendizaje fueron ligeramente llevadas a cabo mientras que otras fueron completamente excluidas, hay una fuerte dependencia de la lengua materna de los estudiantes para asegurar la comprensión, hay una necesidad de exponer a los estudiantes a varios textos auténticos, acentos y ritmos de habla, diferentes a los de su profesor, y factores como el ruido de fondo y la falta de dispositivos tecnológicos apropiados interrumpieron el desarrollo de la habilidad analizada. Sobre la base de estas conclusiones, los investigadores diseñaron un conjunto de herramientas para el profesor titulado "Encuentros de escucha" para proporcionar tareas en las que la capacidad de escucha se vea mejorada y ayudada por la aplicación de diferentes estrategias de aprendizaje.
