Sumario: Described the sociocultural characteristics, knowledge of self-care and labor nutritional requirements, the state of health and the work process of manual workers; was estimated the cost-benefit of the occupational risk in the cleaning task of the patient unit of the Hospital del Niño. A quantitative study of nonexperimental design of a transversal descriptive type was carried out in which 50 workers participated randomly and two instruments were applied (Clinical form and Health & Lifestyle Questionnaire). The cost-benefit assessment of occupational risk was obtained from a computer program (CERSSO toolbox). 92% were male, with more than 10 years working and secondary school education. Food and lifestyle result that 62% includes fruits/vegetables on meals and 64% do exercise regularly. 66% had a normal blood pressure; the average expiratory flow (peak flow) was 464.16 l/min. The metabolic evaluation shows that the mean LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were 118 mg/dl and 47.5 mg/dl respectively. The cost of occupational risk for accidents and/or illnesses was B/.118,334.36 and the cost of investment in health prevention was B/.14,935.55. Manual workers were in good health according to the parameters used. The perception of health and nutritional information suggests offering a preventive work program. In addition, a positive balance was obtained that saves the hospital 7.89 times if an investment is made in occupational risk prevention in a timely manner.
