Summary: |
Afieldtest was established to determine the genetic inheritancepattern for fruit soluble solids (measured as brix percentageof the flesh) between three inbred papaya lines and their threepossible hybrids. The parental lines examineddifferedsignificantly for this characteristic. It was established thathigh levels of sugars are dominant to low levels. It isconcluded that a great potential exists to exploit thisdominant pattern of inheritance since it opens the possibilityof using inbred lines of good agronomic characteristics butwith low fruit flesh sugar content in the making ofcommercial hybrids. The possible underlying mechanismsthat determine this character are discussed for this species. |
