The Latin American countries’ margins of autonomy have been inversely proportional to [perceived U.S. power in the world. We focus our analysis in the post Cold War period. In the first section we situate the Western Hemisphere in the global context of unipolarity following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. In a second section we analyze the recent changes in Latin American foreign policies as a consequence of recent changes in the global balance of power. Thirdly we discuss the evolving content of the concept of security and finally we go over the old and new threats faced by the Latin America countries. Nuestro punto de partida es que la geopolítica en el hemisferio occidental ha estado sobredeterminada por los intereses de seguridad estadounidenses, los cuales a su vez han respondido a sus intereses globales de gran potencia. A mayor grado de impugnación del poderío de Estados Unidos en el plano global, mayores los márgenes de autonomía de los países Latinoamericanos. Enfocamos nuestra reflexión en el período posterior a la guerra fría. Empezamos por dar una visión panorámica del contexto interamericano dentro del marco más general del sistema internacional en clave unipolar. Seguidamente analizamos los cambios en la geopolítica latinoamericana como consecuencia de la difusión del poder y de la multipolaridad que se insinúa en el horizonte temporal del sistema.
