Sumario: The influence of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has created new conditions for the building of a knowledge society. The present study focuses on higher education because it is considered that the university is the place par excellence to develop the knowledge society. The higher education systems need to adapt to a fast-changing world, so they’re being forced to be more flexible and develop strategies for integrating ICTs in the learning processes for the students. However, although the technology has been present in the education during the last years, it still has not been able to observe the desired results; therefore, progress towards a knowledge society in Panama is still hampered. The results reveal the reality that today’s society live: many students feel they don’t have the essential skills to generate their own knowledge and tend to be conformists, keeping them to exploit their potential to the fullest. As previously mentioned, higher education should establish new methodologies in which the student can participate actively in the progress of learning to develop critical thinking skills, new mentality to generate knowledge and practical skills to face the challenges of today’s society.
