Sumario: This article responds to an academic need of the students in careers in industrial design engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica and graphic design at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de la Universidad de Costa Rica, and everyone who is taking his first steps in this discipline, to learn the proper use of graphic elements in a design, such as typeface, photographs, drawings, paintings, etc. to effectively meet a purpose, being a fundamental requirement in the communication to different target audiences to which a product is directed. What is commented in this text is applicable not only for the covers of books, but also for the different designs printed using printing systems available on the market. However, the analysis starts with the design of book covers, objects that have been present in our lives to promote our cultural, scientific, social and intellectual development, among many other activities related with humanbeing.
